Biography

“He was able to bring something unique onto stage.” (ArtsHub).
Eclectic and esoteric, Diimpa is an avant composer, soundscape weaver and sonic wizard. He draws on his experiences as a proud queer autistic Gubbi Gubbi man to create worlds of effortless magic and journey. Diimpa produces these worlds with keyboard instruments like analog synths, music box, glockenspiel or accordion, and through influences from experimental composers like Terry Riley, Pauline Oliveros, Julius Eastman and contemporaries Zoe Keating and Nils Frahm. Through these elements he carves out his own brand of contemporary Australian minimalism. Filled with electric pulses or sublime textures Diimpa's music is, at its heart, transcendent.
Solo work: Diimpa has independently recorded & released three EPs and two albums “Metamorphica” (2016) and “Spectrum” (2018) filled with original compositions and improvisation. He’s been performing these compositions live since 2012 across Melbourne including Federation Square, Hares & Hyenas, Abbotsford Convent, The Butterly Club, and Bluestone Church Arts Space; as well as compositional work featured in independent films “Bam Bam” (2018), “Highly Recommended” (2014), and “Raymond Taylor’s Earnest Adventures In Love” (2013). Diimpa’s self-produced cabaret works include “From The Depths” (2014), “Metamorphica”, and “Cocoon” (2016) - a queer chamber suite as part of Melbourne Fringe Festival. Also part of the festival was 8 hour piano improvisation “Sustenance”, presented by Arts Centre Melbourne and produced by Mama Alto. Other festivals include Yirramboi 2019 and Leaps & Bounds Festival 2017 & ‘18, performing alongside fellow experimental artists. Recently Diimpa has performed with a string quartet, a solo accordion Pauline Oliveros tribute; and raised over $600 for the Russian LGBT Network with single “one”. Accompanying, Arranging, Band work: Diimpa is currently core member, arranger, and composer-in-residence of Forest Collective; in folk band Wilder Genes; and is Musical Director and accompanist for Mama Alto. He began performing as an accompanist in 2010 with The Jane Austen Argument, and from there with Amanda Palmer, coming up through the cabaret scene. The highlight of which being at the Forum with Amanda Palmer and the Grand Theft Orchestra, Kate Miller-Heidke, Missy Higgins, and Die Roten Punkte (2013). He also accompanied Brendan Maclean on Fox FM’s “Random Acts of Instrument” segment (2014). Diimpa has several years of ensemble work up his belt as part of “Gouti: The God Of Them All” (2013), “The Ninth Wave” (2014-15), Terry Riley’s “In C” (2014) & “The Seagull” (2016), and part of several bands including Dearly Wish, The Great Imposter, Pugwashe, and Ambur.
